Sliding is commonly needed to maintain a lateral position within the target window.  Midland Basin operator faced excessive sliding while drilling a new formation. Using AI Driller’s geosteering module, the directional driller noticed that geosteering interpretation indicated that several of these slides were unnecessary as the BHA was tracking dip changes more accurately than the target window.

On the subsequent lateral on the pad in the same target formation, the geologist agreed to widen the target window, allowing the BHA to track in rotation. This adjustment reduced slide footage from 14.5% to 6.0%, saved three runs, and accelerated average drilling ROP by 25%.
